Caminito del Rey Gear & Packing List

What to Pack: The Ultimate Gear List for the Caminito del Rey

The Caminito del Rey is not a technical alpine route. But it is linear, has no exit midway, and anyone who wears the wrong shoes or brings too little water will regret it. The good news: preparation is straightforward – once one knows what actually matters.

What is provided?

At the entrance, all visitors receive free of charge:

  • Helmet (mandatory – must not be removed)
  • Safety vest (mandatory throughout the walkway sections)

Both must be returned at the exit. Personal helmets are not permitted.

The packing list

Footwear – the single most important item

Mandatory: Sturdy, closed footwear. No sandals, no flip-flops, no heels.

Recommended: Light hiking boots or trail shoes with a grippy sole. The surface alternates between rock, gravel and wooden planks – all three can be slippery when wet.

Not recommended: City shoes or trainers with a smooth sole. Technically permitted, but an avoidable hazard on wet walkways.

Water – at least 1.5 litres

There is no drinking water anywhere on the route. In summer the gorge can become very warm despite the shade – air circulation is limited. Plan for at least 1.5 litres; in summer, 2 litres is wiser.

A lightweight refillable bottle works perfectly. A hydration bladder in a pack is even more convenient.

Sun protection

The route includes sections with direct sun exposure – especially on the open stretches before and after the gorge. Sunscreen SPF 30+ and a cap or buff are recommended.

Clothing

  • Comfortable, unrestricted clothing – avoid tight jeans
  • Spring and autumn: bring a light jacket or windshell – inside the gorge it can feel cool despite sunshine
  • Summer: breathable, light-coloured fabrics

Backpack

A small daypack (10–15 litres) is more than enough. Everything needed fits easily: water, snacks, jacket, camera. Space on the walkways is limited – a large pack is impractical and can obstruct other walkers.

Snacks

There is no food available on the route. A few energy bars, nuts or dried fruit cover the 3–5 hour duration comfortably. Anyone planning to eat in El Chorro afterwards need not overthink this.

Camera / smartphone

The Caminito del Rey is one of the most photogenic hiking trails in Europe. Charge the battery. Clear some storage. Those with a camera on a neck strap: on the walkways, tuck it into a jacket pocket rather than letting it swing freely.
