Some places stay with a person long after they leave. The Caminito del Rey is one of them. A path drilled directly into sheer limestone walls. Wooden walkways above gorges 400 metres deep. A protected natural area older than any civilisation in this landscape. And a history that began in 1901 with sailors from Málaga – and today draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from every corner of the world.
To truly understand the Caminito del Rey, a brief description is not enough. This guide covers everything: the route, tickets, how to get there, the best time to visit, safety rules, accommodation and the history of the gorge behind it all.
What is the Caminito del Rey?
The Caminito del Rey is a 7.7 km linear walking trail through the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, one of the deepest gorges on the Iberian Peninsula, in the province of Málaga, Andalusia. The trail runs from Ardales (northern entrance) to Álora / El Chorro (southern exit) – or the reverse. No turning back, one direction only.
Around 3 of the 7.7 kilometres run along wooden walkways bolted directly into the vertical rock faces. At the narrowest points, the gorge is only 10 metres wide; at the deepest, the rock drops 400 metres vertically.
The trail has been fully restored, certified and open daily since 2015. A helmet and safety vest are provided free at the entrance – mandatory throughout the route.

The route: Ardales to Álora
The trail begins at the Ardales visitor centre and leads through pine and holm oak forest into the gorge. The first wooden walkways begin – moderate at first, then increasingly exposed. The heart of the route is the central walkway section: here the gorge is at its narrowest, the walls at their steepest, the experience at its most intense.
Looking up, with luck: griffon vultures riding the thermals. Looking down: the turquoise water of the Embalse del Guadalhorce far below. Looking ahead: the beauty of this trail in full.
At the southern exit in El Chorro, the route ends. From there, the shuttle bus (€2.50) returns to Ardales – or one can take the train back to Málaga.
Tickets: Book early or stay home
Daily places are strictly limited. In high season (March–October), tickets sell out weeks in advance – particularly at weekends and around Easter.
Tickets can be purchased via the official website at caminitodelrey.info or through tour operators such as GetYourGuide.com – advance booking is strongly recommended.

Getting there: by car or train
From Málaga: approx. 50 minutes via the A-357 towards Ardales. From Ronda: approx. 60 km. GPS destination for the northern entrance: Ardales visitor centre. Official car park directly at the entrance: €2.00.
Direct train from Málaga to El Chorro-Caminito del Rey station (approx. 1 hour). Ideal for the southern entrance. The shuttle bus (€2.50) connects El Chorro station with the Ardales northern entrance – bookable directly with the ticket purchase.
Those arriving by car: head for the Ardales northern entrance, return by shuttle after the walk. Those arriving by train: start or finish at El Chorro station – both directions work.
Spring (March–May) – Ideal
The best season for the Caminito del Rey. Moderate temperatures (15–22 °C), vegetation in full bloom, long days. To avoid the biggest crowds: visit on a weekday.
Autumn (September–November) – Excellent
Slightly quieter than spring, still pleasant temperatures. The light is softer, the colours warmer. October is the standout month.
Summer (June–August) – Possible, but hot
Inside the gorge in summer, temperatures can become very warm and airless. Those visiting in summer: start early (entrance from 08:00), bring plenty of water, avoid dark clothing.
Winter (December–February) – Quiet, with caveats
Low visitor numbers, more affordable accommodation. In bad weather, frost or thunderstorms, the route closes at short notice. Always check current information at caminitodelrey.info.

The Caminito del Rey runs through the Paraje Natural Desfiladero de los Gaitanes – a strictly protected natural area. All rules apply without exception:

The gorge: more than a walking trail
The Desfiladero de los Gaitanes is not merely the backdrop for the Caminito del Rey. It is 2,016 hectares of protected natural area, a European Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) since 2002, and home to griffon vultures, golden eagles, Egyptian vultures and peregrine falcons. The limestone through which the Río Guadalhorce carved the gorge is up to 180 million years old. Those who keep their eyes open will see far more than a trail.

Eating & sleeping in El Chorro
The village of El Chorro, right at the southern exit of the trail, is more than a transit point. Those who stay one night experience the region in a different way – the reservoir at dusk, the silence after dark, the Andalusia that day-trippers miss.
Accommodation options cover every budget: from a hotel on the reservoir to a walkers’ hostel and a campsite under the pines.
The bottom line: a trail that stays with you
The Caminito del Rey is not an ordinary walking trail. It is a place where one comes to understand what Andalusian nature truly means: dramatic, silent, ancient. A dialogue between human and rock, between history and the present.
Anyone who visits Málaga and skips this trail has missed something essential.
