Caminito del Rey with Children – Everything Families Need to Know
From What Age Can Children Come? Everything Families Need to Know
The Caminito del Rey is not a playground – but for families with children of the right age, it is one of the most memorable nature experiences Andalusia has to offer. Walkways above gorges, vultures overhead, history carved into the rock. Children who are old enough will not forget this trail.
And children who are too young simply are not allowed on it.

Age rules – firm, no exceptions
| Age group | Rule |
|---|---|
| Under 8 years | No entry – even with adult supervision |
| 8–14 years | Entry with proof of age (passport or ID) |
| 14–18 years | Entry, adult accompaniment mandatory |
| 18 and over | Independent entry |
Minimum height: 1.30 m – checked at the entrance.
These rules apply without exception. Parents arriving with younger children will be turned away at the gate. Tickets are not refunded in this case – check ages and heights carefully before booking.
Why is there an age limit?
The route crosses exposed wooden walkways directly on the cliff face, suspension bridges and narrow gorge passages. Younger children cannot assess the hazards, react unpredictably to height exposure, and can become a danger to themselves and others on the narrow walkways.
The minimum height of 1.30 m ensures children can reach the safety railings.

Tips for families with children
Book a guided tour
For families with children, the guided tour (€18) is a significantly better choice than the single ticket. A certified guide keeps children engaged with stories about vultures, hydroelectric history and the king who named the path. The fixed group dynamic also helps – children feel more secure when others are around.
Start early
In summer, the gorge is still pleasantly cool in the morning. By afternoon it can become hot and airless. An early start preserves energy and patience.
Plan enough water
Children often drink too little on walks. Allow at least 1 litre per child, more in summer. There is no drinking water anywhere on the route.
Bring snacks
Energy bars, dried fruit, nuts. Hungry children on a walkway 100 metres above the gorge floor is a situation best avoided.
Manage expectations
Explain to children in advance what to expect: wooden walkways, height, no turning back. A child who is surprised reacts very differently from one who is prepared. Short videos of the trail can help set the scene.
What if the child is too young?
Children under 8 can still experience the region: viewpoints over the Embalse del Chorro, the village of Ardales or a boat trip on the reservoir are impressive alternatives – with no walkways and no helmet required.

Tickets for families
Tickets can be purchased via the official website at caminitodelrey.info or through tour operators such as GetYourGuide.com – advance booking is strongly recommended, especially from March to October. Daily places are limited.
